Energy Efficient

Improving energy efficiency with Internally Embedded Frames & Thermal Brakes.

Embedded Frames Thermal Brakes

What are internally embedded aluminium frames?

Internally embedded aluminium frames refer to glazing systems in which the aluminium profile is recessed into the internal wall build-up, reducing or eliminating its visibility from the interior.

Unlike conventional or thermally broken frames that remain partially exposed, this approach shifts the internal edge of the frame into the cavity formed by plasterboard, timber lining or joinery.

The result is a cleaner junction where the frame terminates behind, or sits flush with, the finished wall surface.

This configuration reduces the amount of exposed aluminium and optimises thermal performance by aligning the frame more closely with the wall’s insulation zone.

Insulation and linings can be brought directly up to the frame perimeter, improving continuity across the building envelope and reducing thermal bridging at the junction. Products such as AWS’ ComfortEdge™ demonstrate this approach by altering the frame-to-wall interface.

Benefits of embedded frames

Improved thermal performance

By situating the frame within the insulated wall zone, embedded frames reduce the exposure of conductive aluminium to conditioned interior air.

This strengthens thermal continuity and limits heat loss or gain at critical junctions.

Refined sightlines and spatial clarity

Embedding the frame enables wall linings to continue seamlessly to the edge of the glazing, removing the need for bulky internal reveals.

This detailing supports a clean, minimalist aesthetic by reducing visual interruptions at wall-to-window junctions. The resulting frameless appearance enhances access to daylight and views, contributing to a brighter interior

Occupant comfort and lifecycle value

Embedded frames offer long-term value by reducing energy consumption and supporting interior environmental quality throughout the building’s life cycle.

Over time, these performance gains contribute to reduced running costs, improved occupant satisfaction and a more energy-efficient building envelope.

What is thermal breaking?

Thermal breaking is a design feature that improves the energy efficiency of aluminium windows and doors. Normally, aluminium easily conducts heat and cold meaning outside temperatures can pass through the frame and affect indoor comfort.

A thermal break solves this by inserting a polyamide (insulating) strip between the inner and outer aluminium sections of the frame.

This barrier stops heat and cold from transferring through the metal, keeping indoor temperatures more stable.

Explore The Benefits

It’s time to start breaking your windows

ThermalHEART™ window and door systems are thermally broken to deliver improved energy efficiency for buildings. In fact, ThermalHEART™ aluminium windows and doors are up to 51% more thermally efficient than standard non-thermally broken aluminium framing.

The thermal break in ThermalHEART™ windows and doors is created using a polyamide strip between the aluminium exterior and interior elements. Polyamide is an excellent thermal insulator.

The thermal break minimises the transfer of heat and cold through the aluminium window frame, giving the thermally broken aluminium window excellent insulation properties.

Polyamide has very similar expansion rates to aluminium, ensuring ThermalHEART™ extrusions maintain excellent structural integrity.

Benefits of using thermal breaks

Improved energy efficiency

ThermalHEART™ systems are up to 51% more thermally efficient than standard aluminium frames.

Lower heating and cooling costs

Reduces the need for artificial temperature control, saving energy bills year-round.
